You hope that the flow and twists of the wood enhance the finished product. You trust in your skills.
Since wood is a natural material, the flow of grain makes the end products appealing. You’re not just carving a block of plastic, after all.
Often you can’t see the end product hiding in the wood. You need to make leaps of faith, so faith is another word woodcarvers should use.
If you are uncomfortable with hope, trust, and faith, perhaps woodcarving is not for you.
Those bowls are stunning! I do understand how you have to trust the wood to guide you. Each piece is so unique. I’ve always loved natural wood and what can be made from it.
All from firewood. It’s not good enough for the sawmill so it gets passed over, and it’s some of the prettiest stuff.

I had to think, if a person’s uncomfortable with hope, trust, and faith, there aren’t many things in life they’ll enjoy. Marriage, children, employment… 🙂

My friend’s father-in-law did woodworking and we have a beautiful candy dish as a result. Such unique pieces which have a story of their own. As a carver, you are simply helping to turn the pages, I would imagine.
