My father’s advice was that I not get seaman’s papers. Then, in the Navy, I discovered that long deployments at sea, while long in the serenity department, were short on any other “interesting” activity for a young man. Gazing at sunrises, sunsets, and moon reflections over the sea was all well and good. But they left you pleading for a nice, wild party afterward.
Anyway, this morning, after a presidential debate, I woke up thinking that a nice, very long cruise would be nice:
Gonna take a sentimental journey
Gonna set my heart at ease
Gonna make a sentimental journey
To renew old memories
Got my bag, got my reservation
Spent each dime I could afford
Like a child in wild anticipation
Long to hear that, “All aboard!”
Seven, that’s the time we leave, at seven
I’ll be waitin’ up at heaven
Countin’ every mile of railroad track
That takes me back
Never thought my heart could be so yearny
Why did I decide to roam?
Gonna take that sentimental journey
Sentimental journey home

I sometimes wished I’d gone to sea with the navy or aboard a cruise ship perhaps. Must be hard in those times where there is little to do though.
I love your poem, Lou. Captures the energies of going to sea, beautifully. Well done.
P.S. I have to say that vessel in the picture is magnificent!
I should have given the credit on the song It’s an old tune fro the thirties and forties.
No, claim the glory, my friend. Nobody would know.
Gonna’ be pedantic here…
“Les Brown and Ben Homer, and the lyrics were written by Bud Green” not like I didn’t have to look it up. 🤣
I’m coming with you. Hang on!
I’m hearing Doris Day singing…wonderful old song.
Your post made me think of another old song… http://youtu.be/gVYxekAaFRU?si=iiVYfe2UrZqmfjow
