I think there’s an element of truth in that, but if somebody has made themselves well-warmed, well-fed etc. then that’s great, but it doesn’t diminish any previous experience they might have had. We can’t just say, “you’re not in the same position, therefore you can feel no empathy”.
It’s true that experience plays into it. Still, I think Melville was talking about people with no experience, and no achievement of moving from one state to the other – just those comfortably affluent who’d always been that way.

Yep. Colorado passed a couple of good resolutions to continue free school lunches. Someone commented “Everyone votes for enabling.” I dunno…
