Interestingly I just finished reading A Farewell to Arms and I was disappointed, may be I should have picked For Whom the Bell Tolls rather.
I dunno … A lot of it’s just personal taste or how something hits us when we read it. For me? Ernie’s best books are The Old Man and the Sea and The Sun Also Rises. I like A Movable Feast very much. I also enjoyed reading what he had to say about writing. BUT I was absorbed in Ernie’s works in my late 20s. I don’t know how they’d hit me now.
There is a lot of truth in what you said about how they’d hit you now. Many works I loved in my twenties and thirties just don’t have the same pull on me now.
I don’t even read fiction any more. But The Old Man and the Sea will remain one of the loveliest and most helpful books of my whole life. I think about it often. What a true book it is. ❤️
I guess you are right. I read an extract from The Old Man and the Sea and loved it. I guess this particular book felt too depressing and also if you are not exactly in the right frame of mind, they may feel different 😀
