The seasons are changing! About now, the garden is slowing down, the near-endless raking of fall leaves has yet to start, the winter wood is stacked, and after I do the dinner dishes, I can relax. I know it sounds like I’m basking in self-pity. Oh! Poor Lou, he is so busy. He goes to work at the station, tends to all sorts of stuff at home, and, at last, is allowed a small amount of rest!
Naw! I really don’t like doing nothing. Admittedly, my energy levels were whacked back by the weird viral thing I had this summer, but even then I was looking for activity. I am in favor of enjoyable activity for self-care. Everyone seems to mention self-care in terms of stasis. You know, posing for an hour doing nothing, like a bronze statue in the center of the township. That is not my idea of self-care.
I got lots of self-care these past couple of weeks turning the excess bounty of zucchini into loaves of zucchini bread for the family. I tried about four different recipes and wound up blending them into my own. Lots of appreciation from the family as the loaves disappeared for snacks and desserts. That’s self-care with a side helping of making the other members of the family happy.
So when do I like just simple downtime? Maybe on a winter evening when I am done shoveling snow. Then it’s nice to grab some tea with honey, sit down with a book, and relax. There is a time for everything.

Yes, those leaves have started to fall here, Lou. It does become incessant though at the height of the season. I haven’t stocked up with wood yet, we seem to be having a little extended summer so I am behind. 😊
Stacking never gets easier Trev. How much do you burn a year? Here in Massachusetts I average about four to four and a half cords during the heating season – oil is very costly.
I don’t burn much, Lou, and this year seems very mild. I’m unsure too how much a cord is. Probably about 4 large builders rubble size bags per season on average.
That’s easy to keep up with. With all the changes in the climate, we have no idea what to plan for. It could be mild, or it could be wild.
