Just People

What brings a tear of joy to your eye?

What brings a tear of joy to my eye? Random unsolicited kindness.

These days it seems like rank cruelty is the rule – “Screw them, they deserve it! Deviant bastards!” American culture is getting shaped by the vulture culture of People who think they have the moral or political high ground, but really have loads of moral turpitude instead. Oh, let’s add in political idiocy as well.

The other day, I was in one of those traffic slowdowns we’ve had so many of this summer. Off to the side, two people were struggling with changing a tire. The guy in front of me zipped right off the road and onto the shoulder to help change their tire. No motivation other than the desire to be of assistance. No double-checking the other person’s background to see if they were politically or morally pure. Just understanding that these people were in need.

It may take fortitude to counter the rush to anger over ridiculous things. But for the most part, their immigrant status, religious beliefs, gender, or politics are irrelevant when people are in need. They are just people who need assistance.

Art, where you find it

Daily writing prompt
What brings a tear of joy to your eye?

Ceramics and small amounts of paint seemed to be the language of some public art. A lot of publicly presented art is large. It makes tremors in its presentation. But yesterday, I found diminutive but impressive public art and pieces of what appear to be private art presented publicly. All these are in a two-block area in Shelbourne Falls, Massachusetts, but not all are easily found.

I’ve found that unexpected art and public art that you have to seek out brings me a lot of joy. It’s not like the huge equestrian statue that seems to slam you on the head; it’s much more subtle and human scale, sometimes in the least expected spaces.
