Just People

Daily writing prompt
What brings a tear of joy to your eye?

What brings a tear of joy to my eye? Random unsolicited kindness.

These days it seems like rank cruelty is the rule – “Screw them, they deserve it! Deviant bastards!” American culture is getting shaped by the vulture culture of People who think they have the moral or political high ground, but really have loads of moral turpitude instead. Oh, let’s add in political idiocy as well.

The other day, I was in one of those traffic slowdowns we’ve had so many of this summer. Off to the side, two people were struggling with changing a tire. The guy in front of me zipped right off the road and onto the shoulder to help change their tire. No motivation other than the desire to be of assistance. No double-checking the other person’s background to see if they were politically or morally pure. Just understanding that these people were in need.

It may take fortitude to counter the rush to anger over ridiculous things. But for the most part, their immigrant status, religious beliefs, gender, or politics are irrelevant when people are in need. They are just people who need assistance.

  1. This is the one thing Alaska has going for it. We are a Red state- we have our share of ideology recoil going on- but in the end- Alaskans help each other. In certain circumstances we all know- that to not help- is equal to allowing someone to die. I hold this hope close- and pray it holds through whatever lies ahead.

    1. It’s the same in Idaho – I’m from there but don’t live there now. When I go home to visit, my extremely conservative neighbors will stop what they are doing to help someone. They are ACTING out the behavior we have been asking them to verbally support. I think sometimes they don’t even realize it, ha ha.

      1. I am afraid things are going to become crystal clear to everyone in the not-so-distant future.. Thank you so much for this thoughtful response.

  2. I love the message in this. First and foremost remember we are all people. All made the same way. Our differences beyond are vast but should never be an issue. We should see only those in need and help them regardless.
    Well done, Lou.

  3. Absolutely. This is exactly why I keep my politics cards close to my chest. I KNOW the people I live among and I can only hope I am their equal in generosity and kindness. The femur injury, too, suddenly people all over were stepping up to help me. I can’t think of it without tearing up.
