Relax Your Mind

Daily writing prompt
How do you relax?

I probably miss out on a lot of good entertainment on television. But I lost the habit in the 1970s when I was too poor to have a set, and never regained it. From the bits and pieces I catch when my wife is watching, I don’t think that I am missing much. I’d much rather sit down with a good book, play a game of Civilization on the computer, or read other people’s blog posts. Having gotten back into playing guitar again, I can find a lot of enjoyment running through progressions, runs, and even scales.

The Balancing Act

Sometimes relaxation shades a bit too heavily into work. The garden is one area that tends to happen to. I have to guard against that because if I let it get too much like work, I won’t keep it up. That is why this year I decided that next year I would cut the gardening back a bit. This year, I was promised assistance in the garden that didn’t materialize. So next year I will cut back. Surprisingly, this has already led to creative time spent thinking about how I can “right-size” the garden. Amazing what thinking about doing less results in thoughts of more enjoyment!

I am thankful that at seventy-nine, I am still able to do so much physically. Outside activity has always been a large part of my relaxation routines. The arthritis in my feet and ankles has finally ruled out long-distance hiking. But I still enjoy going for walks and browsing stores and sites. I especially appreciate visiting interesting stores, not to buy, but to appreciate the creativity of other craftspeople and artists. It tickles my own creative senses when I see someone else being creative, and I go home to my own shop energized.

  1. I really admire how youโ€™ve found joy in balancing creativity with relaxation. Itโ€™s inspiring that you continue to adjust and make space for what truly brings you peace and energyโ€”even at 79, thatโ€™s such a beautiful reminder that slowing down can actually spark new ways to enjoy life.

  2. Bear seems to have something against my squash bed. She was out there earlier ripping one of the plants to pieces. I don’t know what it did to her, but it must have been grim. As for TV, I watch Italian TV shows on PBS. I don’t know why except I think I’m a little angry at my own country right now and just want it to shut up.
