Camping Tonight

Camping tonight? I think this summer it’s not quite going to be glamorous camping ( glamping?), but certainly not the setting up the tent and sleeping on the ground variety of the old days. The talk among the family, with the kids now taking the lead, is that there is a campground not too far away that has yurts. It would be more appropriate for arthritic joints, a young grandchild and a mixed batch of adults. Not quite the nothing but the basics camping that my wife and I practiced when the kids were growing up.

Without ever cutting corners ( with four kids, and a dog, are you kidding?) We managed to shove everyone into the Caravan, and off we’d go. From a very early age the Carreras kids learned to pack essentials, some special toys, clothes, and sleeping gear. During the summer months we were often out and about two weekends every month.

After I started the carving business things varied a bit. We needed to travel in separate cars because my booth, set up, tools, products and samples took up one vehicle. The kids also learned how to tend booth at the shows. When not running around town with Mom, they could often be found hustling customers in the booth with me. Want to see some sales technique? Be amazed when a ten year old, working on commission, tries to hustle you inito buying some nice cherry spoons. Just what you need for the kitchen!

  1. Glamping does sound an attractive prospect, but there’s always that part of me that would rather be out in the woods with your old ‘nothing but the basics’! It’s that alluring idea of blending in with the wild and being part of nature rather than piggy backing on it. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Ah yes, it would. There again, any movable accommodation that gets us out enjoying nature can only be a good thing.

  2. Yurts are very popular out here — they appeal to people and seem to be very comfortable. It’ll be fun!
