Gawd, last time i got wood delivered it took me about 4 days to stack it, and it was less than I see there. Give me central heating any day.
It’s about three cords, and I take my time stacking over several days. This year I really felt that it might become a true necessity. with all the idiocy about oil. I wasn’t sure that I’d be able to afford to fill the oil tank in February.
Also our old house actually heats better from the woodstove than from the central heating.
I found that here, wood prices have more than doubled over the last four or five years too. They’ve realised that it’s competing directly with gas.
Thanks to idiocy, oil is skyrocketing. All producers are passing the cost on, so between spring and now, the cost of a cord of wood has gone up by fifty dollars. I just paid two hundred dollars per cord. But it will still cost significantly less to heat my house with wood than oil.
Oh I have gas plumbed in, but I started to notice that the price became comparable to wood. But also I find gas cleaner, plus I can turn it off and on at will. I grew to dislike that when I started the fire, I had to keep it going pretty much all day after that.
You have some good points. But our prime heating season, November through March, involves pretty much steady heat here in New England. We light smaller fires in the “shoulder” seasons in the fall and spring. Also, the stove has a damper to control how hot it burns.
Don’t delay!! It’s a lot of work, but so worth it.
We finished up this morning. It was all really good stuff with lots of red oak, very dry and ready to burn. We ordered and paid for two cords, but it was actually three with lots of scrap for early fall fires and kindling. I am super satisfied!
It is just a pleasure to burn dry wood.
I was lucky this year, the quality was high.
