Is It Magic?

What are your thoughts about cryptocurrency?

I once heard a definition that stated that any technology sufficiently advanced that it defies description is actually magic. Reading a definition of cryptocurrency this morning made me think about that definition because I got lost in the first sentence. But thinking about the Binance hack, the theft of six billion dollars in cryptocurrency, and other idiocies revolving around crypto, I’d rather go with it not being magic, but rather sorcery. I’d define sorcery as the use of magical means for evil practice.

How do I back this up? My state is about to ban crypto ATMs because of their use in fraud and criminal activities. People are being blackmailed, and payment is demanded in crypto. So you go to a crypto ATM, deposit real coin of the realm electronically, and transmit the crypto to the blackmailer. Sorry, folks, this is not a family-friendly technology. And it’s not Lou taking a swing with a big bat at a new technology he doesn’t understand.

Cryptocurrency is also not something that is only occurring in the dark recesses of the internet or on the back street where they are pushing illegal drugs. It ain’t no rinkydink hustle. On a busy street corner in my city, there was a “crypto club”. It advertised that it was the place to learn, share, and earn. I’ve heard that this chain of crypto palaces has folded as a scam, and that does not surprise me.

So, my thought on cryptocurrency? You are better off investing in that wonderful bridge to Brooklyn. And today I have such a deal for you! I’m ready to sell off my investment in it. But I don’t accept crypto – just real coin of the realm!

  1. I agree. Crypto, in a nutshell, is bad, stupid, and dangerous. A big clue to that is the Shuckster-in-Chief is for it and has gotten rich off it. I have to admit that I thought it was going to totally collapse before now. I also think few people, even the ones who are totally into it, truly understand it.

One quibble: I’ve heard your definition of magic before (as in, 200 years ago an ordinary lightbulb/electricity would have been ‘magic’). It’s valid. Magic isn’t good or bad; like any tool, it can be used either way. Witch vs. sorcerer is just the way one goes about magic, so witch/witchcraft, sorcerer/sorcery aren’t inherently evil. In fact, I know several who are absolutely wonderful folk, and my favorite teacher calls himself a sorcerer. ๐Ÿ™‚
