I've had a mixed-up relationship with hats.
Free is a dangerous word, and worse, it's a slippery concept. Why? Well, it opens the path for the abuse of generosity.
I consider rebates to be a kind of iniquity. I must send in the information electronically or by mail, wait until it is verified, and wait until the rebate is redeemed. Frequently this takes so long that I am left trying to figure out where the check for $1.98 came from.
The popular press and media like to paint human creativity as extraordinary "aha!' sort of moments. And I guess that some creative insights do fall into that category.
I've avoided being the sort of guy whose calendar book is full of checkable events.

My father was a problematic sort of guy: a former Marine, Merchant Marine engineer, the guy who could fix anything, and bad-tempered. So growing up, I was the navigational fix for the bad temper.
"You better mend your ways, young man!" I can still hear the exact tone and the pitch of voice my mother used. Sometimes she'd deploy the phrase in humor. But mostly when she suspected that I was about to commit some impertinent gaff in the company's presence.
Odin was said to have surrendered an eye in exchange for wisdom. But having been in more than one painful spot than I'd like to admit to, I estimate that, god or no, he wound up in a bad situation and gained his wisdom the usual way, at a high cost.
