Some things are great for close-up appreciation, and others are meant and designed for distance viewing.
It’s a problem that shipscarvers often have – design an elaborate banner board for the transom of a ketch, and the letter carving needs to be bold. But, the banner itself needs to avoid being overly delicate. It must stand up to the abuse a marine environment will throw at it.
Here is the conundrum, however – when you are doing a boat show and trying to get commissions, people view that board from a distance of inches, not tens of feet. To look attractive, the board needs to be finely cut to have the same visual impact. So, you learn to strike compromises and make things appear delicate without compromising strength.
It’s one thing to say that, but another to balance the delicate against robust construction.

Wow! I’ve never considered that before. Thanks for expanding my appreciation for such art, Lou. ๐
Fitness for use. That’s the burden of any quality decision.
I think your conundrum of finding a “balance” applies to our lives well too.
True, the same issues and needs pop up in many places and times.
