It’s been a rare Saturday morning. My wife arrived home from work early and joined me in the dining room as the dog, kittens, and I watched the morning parade of birds at the feeders – a flat tray, suet feeders, and a feeder near the bushes. I was glad there were so many birds this morning for her to see; rarely is she home early enough for this little ritual.
What was there to watch? The normal flock of sparrows, a pair of song sparrows, chickadees, a red-headed finch, the junco flock, and several bluebirds. The bluebirds started showing up last week but are now morning regulars at the suet feeders. They are the first bluebirds at the feeders in some twenty-six years of feeding at this location.
We get the usual local birds – those I’ve listed- plus cardinals, three species of woodpecker, wrens, nuthatches, and the odd visitor from elsewhere who’s heard that there are multiple feeders, no waiting, and a four-star menu.
It’s always a great way to start the day with a cup of coffee, companionship from kittens and our dog, and watching the birds.
