Yes, I know. Most likely, you think the words I’d choose were suave or sophisticated. But too many friends, and not friends have chosen, hellion, bastard, devil spawn and such. They just don’t know me.
It is true that in my younger days, I did a bit more than my share of raising Cain, tom-catting, and “going to see the varmint. But, in the words of Saint Augustine, “It was wicked, but I loved it.” Well I don’t know, about the wicked part…after all we were all consenting adults. And you know, as the good saint also said, โNo one can be a saint without first being human.โ And I as very human!
So you say, what advice would I give to youth? Well, it depends on who is answering: Lou or my alter ego, the coffeehouse singing, road tripping, Pius Itinerant Wes. I’d say restrict yourself to the sane, moderation in all things. Keep it simple. But the hell-raising Wes…damn! That’s another story.
Wes: Well, digging into Saint Augustine again, I’d remind you that he famously asked the Lord: “Oh lord, give me chastity, but not yet.” Sweet!
Lou: But then later, he mentioned that: โOur habits make us, and to choose wisely is our responsibility.โ
So, in the words of the knight in the Indiana Jones movie, ” Choose, but choose wisely.” and of course have fun.
