Judy’s Number Game, Number 97

And the number is: 219

  • This interesting piece was on the wall at a great casual restaurant in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
  • I often do practice pieces before I actually start work on a commission. It allows me to see how fonts and composition will look before I start the actual job. Many wind up afterwards as fuel.
  • One of my schooner carvings in process.
  • this exquisite piece of carving was recovered from the Titanic.
  • One of my cherry bowls. This one sold days after I had finished it.
  • The Cunard liner Servia.
  • The suit of sails I carved for my portrait of the Cunard Liner Servia.

  1. Thanks for being a faithful Numbers Game player. I love the fire photo. Why are you burning up your Skiff sign? And.. what do you love more..sailing or creating your woodcuts of it?

    1. I make practice pieces of work on scrap lumber. Sometimes I save a piece for making others like it later, but some is just junk and winds up as kindling.
In this case it was a kind of funky commission and the practice peice was kind of junk after I was finihsed with it. The funny thing is that after I finished the transom boards I was given an equally funky commission from the same boat owner. I saved that practice piece because it showed potential for being adapted into the designs. My shops are littered with practice and referance pieces saved “just in case.”
I bet your husband did something similar.

      1. Not really. He didn’t do signs. so didn’t have designs he ever repeated. I’ll try to find some photos of his carved wood pieces and do a blog just for thee…
