Arts and Crafts Day

Daily writing prompt
Invent a holiday! Explain how and why everyone should celebrate.

It’s just my personal opinion. But I don’t think we need another holiday for beach-going, mysterious doings on dark, chilly nights or drunks who careen into buildings on their way home. No. We need something creative. Let’s use the working title ofย “Arts and Crafts Day.”

It would be a day for an esthetic ministry to all sorts of arts and crafts. The chorus‘ would sing on the Town Green. Studios would be open for free lessons. And a perfect day would be one where you went home with a work of beauty you had created.

Some guidelines would beย helpful. As a carver, I might teach at my shop or dedicate the day to learning something new, like macrame. Someone who made collages might spend time with a chorus or a rock band.

The general ideaย is to cross-fertilize artistic impulses and encourage everyone to think and act creatively for at least one day.

Now, someone has to keep the wheels of the economy rolling. So I suggest the trenchantly non-artistic – those who refuse to light any spark of creativity at all – be allowed to work. Yup, work while the rest of us get to play. Yes, play with the clay at the potters, fabric at the quilters, thread and cloth at the clothier, paint at the painters…well, you get the idea.

So happy “Arts and Crafts Day.”

  1. I fully agree, Lou! I don’t need another holiday. I have actually found a place to learn new crafts from others and I go once a week now that I’ve found them. I learn from quilters so many new ways of doing things on Mondays and Wednesdays probably one to two dozen women meet at the museum down the road and everyone is doing something different. Some days are demonstration day and we all get to try our hand at something different. I’ve been taking photos. ๐Ÿ™‚ Some go to lunch after. Great idea and I love the carving even if you didn’t do it. ๐Ÿ™‚
