Camping Tonight

I once tried to total up the time I had spent camping. My attempt to play auditor ended with me drowsing off long before I approached the days when my wife and I took the kids on long trips to Maine.ย

If we were free on a weekend, off we’d go. We’d pack the brood into the car for a trip. It was cheap, fun, and enriching for the kids.

On the trips, no museum, nature trail, or cheap attraction was safe from the four Carreras kids. Cooking over campfires, cleaning up camp after it was washed away in a storm, climbing mountains, and, of course, running into nearby towns to do laundry on long trips…unforgettable memories.

Family dogs joined in the action, too, sleeping in a tent with the kids and socializing with other camping dogs. But disgruntled family cats had to be satisfied with sulking at home and smelling everything when we returned.

Just last week, the kids, now adults, contacted my wife and me about the possibility of a camping trip this summer. It’s nice to know that patterns we established when they were very young ( as in infants!) still flourish now that they are adults.

I need a more comfy camping mattress now…the back is not quite what it used to be.

  1. Same. I grew up camping with my parents and siblings; and we continued that tradition with our own kids; now you’d be hard pressed to get me spending a night in a ‘camping’ situation. In 1985, when we lived in Maryland, we took the kids to Maine and spent a week camping on Mt. Desert Island. It was a glorious week! ~Ed.

    1. Mount Desert Isalnd was one of our favorite places to go. In town their was a near shop run by the brother of am anthropologist I knew. We always dropped by and the kids found nifty stuff.

  2. What wonderful memories, I love nothing more than camping surrounded by nature. Getting to visit all the museums and nature trails only makes it better. Its such a relaxing, healing time isn’t it?
