Pirate—No! I mean Privateer – in 74 words

My mother’s mistake was letting me know when I was little that we had an ancestor hung for piracy. Oh, she regretted that! It set off a long search for our Priveteering rootsโ€ฆGentlemen of Fortune – not mere Pirates.
On investigation, it appears that being a successful pira โ€”I mean Privateerโ€”you had to be successful in business. You had to know where to garner goods, how to hold them, and when to unload them.

  1. Hold your head high, Lou. My husband’s family has the dubious distinction of having an ancestor who was the first off the Mayflower to be hanged for some crime or other!

    1. Intersting about that. Ther second “Pilrgim” ship went to Providence Island, another batch of my ancestors. Instead of being holier than thou they went the other way, Piracy, slaves, tobacco, all the naughty stuff.
      Anyway there is a letter in the provincial archices in London from the leaders of Providence Island inviting their Massachuesetts relatives down foe a great season of piracy, plunder and mayhem. Your husband’s ancestor was probably led astray by one of mine…Sorry!
