When you start running in a corridor, do you suddenly remember the teachers’ admonition, “Walk, don’t run!” ?
Years later, in totally unrelated circumstances, there’s that voice again. Unlucky you! Out of the dozens of kids running for their next class, Mr. Polici picks you out of the herd and pullsย youย over.
Come on, don’t give me that “who me?” look. You know what I am talking about.
Maybe the teacher collared you and said, “You’re a slacker! Mr ( or Ms.), just a slacker!”
Have you watched the Back to the Future movies?
The scene where the teacher calls Marty a slacker had me sinking down in the seat to hide. It lit up all sorts of unpleasant memories of teachers who had decided that I was a slacker.
It’s one of those situations where an unfortunate repeated comment creates its own reality. The makers of the movie certainly understood that. Marty McFly spends most of the first movie understanding that it’s not him who’s the slacker.
Cut loose. Next time that voice echoes in your memory, give it the finger and run!

Oh that voice. Definitely give it the finger.
I wonder if the teachers in the 1960’s ever got the finger.
Some of the teachers looked the other way because they basically didn’t care. My High School, at that time was tough place.
