I have a sort of arbitrary goal post set up to retire at eighty. You laugh? I’m currently 78 and working as a station manager and videographer. But I was asked the other day what I planned to do after I retired. Well I’ll garden more, spend more time carving, and be available for another job – if it’s the right one.
“Lou, you gotta be nuts!” – that’s right, I hear you out there in Toronto and you in Portland. I have no genuine desire to dandle grandkids on my lap. Or to pontificate to my kids about how things were in the old days. I have a blog for pontification!
I’ve been fortunate. To this point, I have been blessed with the ability to get around still and be healthy for my age. My wife works full time. And the kids are busy with careers. I’d be nuts to put my feet up and vegetate on the angularity of primordial systems of geometry and such deep philosophical claptrap. I have things I’d like to do!
So what type of position would I accept, if offered? Well, I would not be averse to returning to applied anthropology. I never finished my doctorate, but I worked for about sixteen years in applied anthropology. Mostly, I created and developed cultural and educational programs. I worked for various employers and as a consultant ( including the Smithsonian, the Department of the Interior, and many non-profits). I had a ball doing this, and I did some social good while I did it.
So, yes, I wouldn’t mind stepping back into that old comfortable me from way back when. Who do I want to be? Me
Hmmm…half-time would be about correct.
Is this likely to happen? Probably not. Many of the places that hire people like me are retrenching, and anything that smacks of DEI is being smacked down.
But here I am available, and game. So, if you hear of anyone interested, go ahead and contact me.

I don’t look at retirement as stopping doing stuff; for me it’s been starting doing stuff! ๐
Right attitude!
