Over the past three years, I’ve become much more restrictive about my online life. It’s open here at WordPress, but throttled elsewhere. Being that I write a daily blog and often include recollections of my past life, you might conclude that I’m not too private. That’s not true. The blog is about what I am willing, even generous in sharing, versus what is stolen without my consent on other platforms.
Then, too, there is the barrage of other platforms of unwanted advertisements, idiotic “reels”, and invasive inquiries. It’s like a lottery, where the consumer is always the perpetual loser.
I’ve also dropped or disabled many apps that either don’t perform or perform badly. I don’t have a pestering Siri invading my communications with idiotic suggestions.
I have noted something about turning off or muting the new pervasive “assistants” the means to turn them off are often hidden, and difficult.
If they are so good, beneficial, and beneficent, why is that the case? Are we toddlers that need to have parents make decisions for us?

I am the same Lou. My mobile phone is a phone 90% of the time. I do everything on my PC.
But with every “upgrade” they make the systems more bloated with “features”.
True that
I have two social media accounts besides the blog, and never post anything on either of them. I just look use them for my own entertainment.
wise
Yup. Last phone I bought, it came with some commercial 3rd-party apps installed. What’s more it was not possible to remove them. It really puts me off that brand of phone.
Isn’t it wonderful that they don’t trust us to make our own choices?
I have fun toying with algorithms. I had more fun, though, before coming online!
This is on my mind, too. I’ve turned off everything that’s not “me” driven. I was having a good time with google’s bot until it offered to send me reminders to do my saved algebra problems. I’m not 10 years old, and reminders are insulting, and, imo, put the AI in a position I do not ever want it to be. luckily I caught up with the beginning of my Christmas present algebra text.
I have a separate app that blocks all the trackers. It is amazing how many sites track you while you visit them.
Yep. I have one, too.
I often wonder if leaving my PC in sleep mode spies on me.
I may be paranoid, but I cover the camera when I am not using it.
good idea I’m putting a post it note on it right now!
I’m old school, always nervous about all these apps and programmes. On the other hand, I’m not paranoid. anyone who wants to spy on me go through each day is going to be very bored.
