Danger, Danger

The TV habit was hard to maintain on the road before cell phones, tablets, and laptops. The final episode of Lost In Outer Space was watched in front of an old tube TV in Baltimore. I was babysitting for my friends while they were out.

The Robinsons were still stuck in outer space, and even if there had been other episodes, I wouldn’t have been able to watch them. No TV, no TV habit. Sure, on occasion, I’d watch TV while staying with friends, but it was all a mishmash. I hadn’t watched the earlier episodes and wouldn’t be around for the later ones. Yup. “Danger, Will Robinson, Danger, Danger!!!” was the end.

Now I could have gotten a TV when I settled. But then I was a poor, very poor, student. Feeding the cat and myself after buying books was the priority. Once again, I made stops at friends’ homes to watch historic events. I didn’t ever even consider buying a used TV. I had my faithful AM-FM radio and tape deck. Who needed more? The names of the most popular series of the day? Look. I don’t play bingo, and couldn’t list the names of three bingo calls for love nor money. The popular names of series on TV? The same.

My lack of a TV and a TV habit has had a major consequence. References. Get into a conversation with a person who loves TV, and I’m like a man from Mars. Most recent fashion? Best recent quip on nighttime television? Or who’s cheating on the favorite serial? I have no clue.

My night shift wife watches the tube to get herself dozy for bed. I pass through the room and occasionally check in, but just move along. It’s just been too long, and even series that she’s watching that I think are interesting, I won’t get involved in. I’ll get busy with some other project, lose track of what’s happening, and get frustrated.

So no. I have no clue about how it all ends, and whether it’s perfect or not.

  1. Thank goodness they’ve fixed the comment section. Sheesha! I’m more of a movie buff than a television show watcher. Too many commercials, and I don’t really like most of the drama. Nowadays, I mostly watch documentaries and old movies, where I already know the outcome… hugs

  2. My mom was constantly buying me TV sets. I didn’t want one and It pissed me off that she thought it was important. Then the B—-h died. She left my alcoholic bro a 2 year old Chrysler, and she left me a TV from the 80s, which, of course, I gave to my bro. The good part of that is how hard my Aunt Jo and I laughed at that.
