‘Well, I’m running down the road tryin’ to loosen my load I’ve got seven women on my mind. Four that wanna own me, two that wanna stone me. One says she’s a friend of mine.” -Eagles, 1972
A repetitive earworm, periodically since it was released in 1972, has been Take It Easy. It’s not too hard for me to remember why either. My tether on the newly established and settled life was only two years old. The tumbleweed still wanted to take off for parts undecided periodically. Especially in spring, I’d ruminate on “the Spring Road Trip”, but as time rolled on, that spring trip became trips to academic symposia where I’d be listening to and presenting a paper I’d written. But as tame as this was, it was still salve on the itchy foot. No more grand expeditions and frolicking detours all over the place. An easy fix!
Eventually, the song just became a cue to recall, rather than a call to wander. That decrease happened gradually over the years, and when it did come, it was most easily satisfied with a camping trip with the family.

I love the story of this song… I’m a big Jackson Browne fan, apparently it was his song his song and he was stuck on the second verse. Glenn Frey was his neighbor in an apartment building they shared… so Glenn asked him about the song and JB told him that he was stuck on it and he played it for him and Glenn added the famous line “its a girl my Lord in flatbed Ford slowin down to take a look at me” but JB gave it to the Eagles… this is the story I’ve always heard idk lol
Martha’s dog, Teddy, and I are singing this song right now! Darn, Teddy does good harmony.
Max does rhythm!
That’s what he was doing out on our walk this morning! You guys are good together!
I don’t have an itchy foot any more either. I don’t leave the San Luis Valley. I don’t want to and so far I haven’t needed to — not in the past five years anyway. Bear, Teddy and I like it here and things got complicated where we used to travel which obviated that possibility.
Nothing wrong with that ๐
Absolutely!
Road trips are incomplete without songs and some because just the songs for those road trips. Although I was never a big fan of road trips it was only later that I realized the charms, especially the company that makes the difference. I remember one of the earliest was to a neighbouring town, in fact the town that receives the heaviest rainfall in the world and we barely saw anything-everything was shrouded in clouds and mist but I remember the songs we listened to and even now when that song randomly comes it I am transported to the time, the winding roads and the clouds.
