The Cap’ns English

My father-in-law, the Cap'n, owned a beautiful Ketch called Psyche. As a general helper, crew, and cook,  I tried to keep up on all the maintenance and provisioning. One day, I was aboard cleaning up from a week-long family jaunt to Monhegan when the Cap'n appeared and started getting ready to make sail. I fumed …

The small access television station where I work is located in a basement. I have little social contact down there, and right now, I am the boss and the only worker. This was ideal during COVIDโ€”no worries about isolating. If I saw someone while coming into work, they were already halfway to the other side …

Cultivating My Garden – Stream of Consciousness Saturday

I have tried a variety of gardening methods over the years. I've finally settled on high raised beds. It's not just that my back, knees, and arthritic feet complain less. It's about post-glacial New England. I live on a hill composed mostly of gravel, sand, and rock left behind by the retreating ice sheets. Soil …

Sloop

At Spinney's Yard Spinneyโ€™s yard was no different than lots of yards on the mid-coast, and in most ways, Spinney was not too different than the run of yard owners. He worried about the big Tahiti Ketch that had sat in the yard for years while the estate tried to sell it. It took up …

Not yet for this Dogwood

It's an alternate leaved dogwood. A memeber of the same genus at the other dogwoods, but smaller and with an lovely pryamidal shape when allowed to grow freely. It's just a little slower to open, it's very lovely, small blossoms.

Snowflake

I rapidly discovered that Snowflake liked to ride by the apple orchard, and if we passed by it, the ride was peaceful.

A Rude Awakening

When my first father-in-law, the Cap'n, discovered I could carve, he began thinking about how this could be used in one of his enterprises. He was famous, or infamous, around the cove for preying on summer people needing services for their boats. Once I came along, services were expanded to include much work the Cap'n …

Coastal Cooking – Finnan Haddie

I was not always enamored of things like Finnan Haddie. I grew up in New York City, where they made soup - I can no longer refer to it as Chowder- out of clams in a tomatoey base. I couldn't touch the stuff because I was allergic to bivalves ( clams, oysters, scallops - you know). But I never knew about fish chowder. So, I got a real education when I left "The City" for points north.

Townie

Watching national politics play out has become an obsession. And perhaps not a healthy one.
