Deus Ex Machina

Deus Ex Machina: The god from the machine. It’s a term derived from the ancient theatre when the god or gods would appear on stage via a mechanical contraption, thus appearing to come on earth from high to sort things out. Last night, something I was reading stirred the concept and brought it to the forefront of my imagination. There are times in all our lives that we can’t tackle something, and we would love to have the diety sort it out for us.

I reached that junction often in the past, and I think there were times when I received extra support to help resolve big problems, like my drinking or smoking. But no Deus Ex Machina.

I won’t deny that I’ve heard of some extraordinary things. But I am fortunate and grateful that the help I’ve needed has been, in the little ways, some guidance and opportunities to learn to handle my issues.

I’ll gladly leave the deus ex machina for those with more significant problems than I have.
