One of the lines I hand my darling wife periodically is that I kissed a lot of frog princesses before I found an actual princess – her. Another line I hand out is that my cat Clancy, AKA the Grey Menace, was a better judge of female character than I. Eventually, I began to listen to his sagacious ruminations on the worthiness of my choice of female companions. I was listening to him when I met and started dating my wife.
Sorry, but you could say that my ability to judge women needs work. But being New York City born and bred, I can sense low character, meanness, and ulterior motives in certain urban habitues. We’re talking about low types of hustlers, pushers, con artists, and creeps here. I’d have been clueless about this if left to my own devices. But My dad, Nick Carreras, was a merchant seaman, former Marine, and a dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker. No son of his could get away without an education in street smarts. As a result, I have been called suspicious and entirely too leery of people. In response, I reply that I survived where others haven’t and that cons, buncos, and narcs tended to give me a wide berth.
So, back to the character thing. Yes and no. I am a terrible judge of character in women I am attracted to. But I have an excellent and well-honed suspicion of those who like to hornswoggle, hustle, scam, con, cheat, and prevaricate. With the former, my problem is resolved – I am fastly attached to the one woman who completes me. And on the other hand, I am permanently disgusted by the political class.
That’s my Story, and I’m sticking to it!

I have no idea if I’m a good judge of character or not. I don’t think so. My list of frogs is too long for me to have any confidence. At this point I’m grateful the issue is moot.
Yeah…at our age the issue is kind of moot.
