A Contenda!

This time of year, I spend just a bit more time watching TV or on my computer, watching politicians offer warm and sincere feelings of brotherly love, joy, and best wishes for the New Year.

Just the week before, they’d been snarling about jailing the miscreants who opposed them in their righteous campaign against whatever idiot cause their aides had fabricated for them to rant about. But having grown weary of the negative, they find themselves transformed by the nature of the season of joy.

One can grow weary of watching the rapt and rapturous expressions that have overtaken these virtuous warriors as they lay down their innuendos, sneers, and threats of legal sanctions. All is peace and joy as they tape the 10-โ€”or 15-second spot for their constituents.

Okay, I’m not a child, so I’ve watched thisย “Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”ย transformation countless times over the years. Once I get past the hypocrisy, Iย find myself admiringย theย bravuraย performance. In the words of Marlon Brandon’s character in On the Waterfront :

“I coulda had class. I coulda been a contenda. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let’s face it.”

Absolutely, they coulda have been somebody instead of a bum.

  1. Oh I was just talking with Pedro about this last night. Our conversation was about a particular person in the news. Pedro says, “But he was doing his job. He had a commitment to shareholders and was hired for that reason.” My argument was that he knew what the job entailed, and if not before he took it, after he took it. He did not need to continue to do a job that he could not be proud of. My argument is that there needs to be accountability. Not that a person shouldn’t be allowed to take a despicable job, but that if a person chooses to, then they also need to accept accountability.

    1. What a unique concept, Crystal! Accounability in commerce and politics…naaa, it’l never catch on! no profit in it. Damn I’m cynical today!

  2. One of the classless bums here in Florida is now hosting his own prime time radio show. I guess he feels like now he’s a contenda! PS: he’s not.

    1. I’d argue that the Brando character had a great amount of self knowledge just knowing he was a bum. Most politiciand lack that much insight. So, Yeah I agree 100% with you!
