The Fate of the Political Cartoon

Political cartoons are no longer amusing. Instead of being sarcastic or imaginative mockeries of reality, they are rather pale reflections of what’s really going on. Most cartoons gain traction by exaggerating and playing on reality. But these days, reality beats the pants off the cartoons. It’s enough to make a guy jittery. Satire can no longer keep up with reality. It’s the sunrise of a new reality.

This may be why more and more newspapers are dropping their cartoonists. The entire industry has been aced by TikTok and YouTube Evangelists of the absurd, unusual, weird, and dangerous.

How can a mere cartoonist compete against that?

  1. I don’t know, Lou. I’ve seen some pretty good political cartoons of late. I hope the role of political cartoonist doesn’t go the way of the TV repairman.

  2. I enjoy the political cartoons too! I just wonder if cartoons in general are going away because the days of a paper comic book and newspaper are soon to be a thing of the past
