Carved sign in Portland, Maine

carving of a Southport 30

small eagle based on a design used on a paddlewheel steamboat

All carvings today. The only one that is not mine is the sign. The rest are mine. the shop photo I took one day of some of the patterns that hung in my shop. Like a lot of people who do maritime work, patterns accumulate – you might alter the size or some feature of it for a specific job. But having the pattern beats redoing a popular piece a dozen times.

Do you have a portfolio that you show people when they begin asking about custom work?
It depends on what they are interested in. when I did shows I took samples of everything most often asked for – trailboards, quarterboards, Transom Banners, Eagles, and Boat Portraits. Almost all I ever do now is the portraits. And I’m careful about the commissions that I’ll accept – with age comes a bit of wisdom.
Absolutely! That kind of wisdom is good to get as soon as possible… ๐
Very cool!!!
