Venture is hand-carved in mahogany and was a sample piece of a small transom banner for a small sloop style sailboat.
I enjoy this composite style of work. The hand-carved ship sails on a storm-wracked sea, with a motto below. It’s a composite style, and great fun to do.
It’s a technique I’ve borrowed from 19th-century sailors’ dioramas. The sails are carved and added separately, adding drama and depth to the finished composition.
After you’ve finished a batch, tempered them in boiling water, and done a final smoothing it is time to finish the spoons with mineral oil. I use mineral oil because it will not turn rancid, and seals the spoon against absorbing the tastes of what you cook.
The carving of the Great Seal of the United States is remarkably detailed. Not an easy project, but it comes with an enormous number of lessons for a carver. I did a series of study photos of this 19th-century carving of the seal for reference.

Those were for an earlier work on a Cunard Liner. But I have made some working drawings HMS Falcon that is in the offing. If everything goes right two carvings will be done – that certaib ship you mention of the starboard tack and Falcon on the port. Should be interesting.
I love your scholarly pooch. Mine have the same dogtag. As always, love your spoons aas well. I have a big holder just full of homemade wooden spoon..I use them for everything!
They are great – one of their advantages is that when temperture is critical they do not change the temperature of what you are cooking, like metal can. Also no micro plastics from the plastic ones.
And they are so esthetically pleasing!!!
