We have three pets, a nutty Australian Cattle dog and two cats. Life is a bit chaotic sometimes, thanks to them. Hell, it can be a circus! But with their personal quirks, ability to confound expectations, and amusing antics, they keep things interesting around the house. All of them are rescues.
Max came to us from a mostly absent family. When he wasn’t in a crate, he was being boarded out while they were away. Eventually, they surrendered him for adoption. His big thing is running around the yard, along the trails in the wooded section, and generally trying to run everyone’s life in a way that a cattle dog would approve of.
Sabrina and Marcus are our two half-Bengal cats. They were a bonded pair of siblings we adopted from the shelter. Marcus is reserved but bold. As soon as the cage was opened at the shelter, he jumped onto my shoulder to assume ownership. Sabrina is the chatty and expressive one. She will gladly carry on a conversation while rubbing all over you. Her big thing is lying on the elevated cat tree inside the door and talking to the birds at the feeder. So far, she has had no luck talking them into visiting inside for a fast snack. Both cats are indoor cats and only go out into the yard on harnesses. So far this year, they haven’t discovered the frogs in the pond…wait for it!
Altogether
The three form a team. Waking dad up to feed them in the morning is a carefully coordinated effort that starts with one cat, then two, and finally, failing all other efforts, comes the dog to lick me awake.
Max and Marcus are Bro’s. They play together and spend lots of quality time hanging out. They may have come from widely separated backgrounds and species, but the differences have blurred as they have bonded.
Having the three in my life provides a lot of structure to what would otherwise be chaos in my poorly organized day. Foremost, they provide affection and a diversion from the serious aspects of what’s going on in the world.
I know some would find my three to be a bit overwhelming, but my wife and I love them…except when the cats try to hog the bed . Well, no one is perfect.

This is wonderful, Lou. I love the personalities of cats and dogs. Lucky Max to have found you.
He thinks like a Cattle Dog – We are the lucky ones.
I’m a little friable right now, but this brought tears to my eyes. This morning I got up, emerged, to find Teddy had decided to let Bear have me all to herself for the good morning greetings. It was incomparably sweet. Then they ran outside and wrestled.
I remember 9/11/01. That afternoon I took a couple dogs for a hike in the strangely silent (no flights in a military town?) San Diego. While the event was awful, awful, we three savored our privacy and the silence. I do not know how I would have borne my life without my dogs. I don’t even want to think about it. Please give Max, Marcus and Sabrina love from us. Oh what, Teddy? Yes, I think Lou knows he’s lucky to have a herding dog to keep things in line. Oh brother. They’re so controlling.
I agree, life without them would be an impovrished existance.
Not worth considering.
So warm and so nice.
