Process

Daily writing prompt
Share a lesson you wish you had learned earlier in life.

Maybe you’ve heard the old saying that when the student is ready, the teacher appears? In a similar vein, I feel the same way about lessons in life; you learn them when you’re ready. No dulcet tones of affection will change a rotten relationship into a healthy one. And no amount of harassment will make the alcoholic stop drinking.

What you can do, however, is set the stage for change and develop the basis that will lead to it. At least this is my personal opinion, and the approach I used. I discovered that just the will to change was not enough. I needed the skills and perspectives required to take the steps leading to change. those were developed step by step.

Do I wish I could have made not only the decision to change, but the changes, earlier? Absolutely. But for me, it was the process leading to the change that made it work. No. I’m not going to give an explanation of my processes here. I think everyone’s will be different. But setting yourself up for success is the key.

One bit of advice I learned the hard way, though, was that there are manipulative people out there who will look you right in the eye, ask to be trusted, and screw you to the wall. Change is full of danger. Watch your back while on the path.
