The One Word?

Has it ever enraged you to hear someone described as a hunk or as hot? Maybe you haven’t decried the practice when it’s the boss you hate getting toasted over lunch and getting described as a cretin, idiot, or an a-hole. Single-word descriptions – the original topic we can’t live with or without. So unflattering but so satisying.
Single-word descriptions are the punchline of sitcom gags, with the laugh track running behind. We use them as punctuation without considering how they put complex people in simpleminded cubbyholes.
I’ve certainly done it; some people earn their description through their behavior and maybe even relish it. So there can be a fantasy aspect to it- the individual who continually looks for fights, describing himself as the Terminator.
Unflattering descriptors may have ethical, moral, or legal ramifications. The sociolinguistics of unflattering sexual, racial, and ethnic slurs are heavily weighted by single words used to put down, discriminate against, or abuse people.

Let’s use a bit more imagination when describing people. If asked for the single word that best describes me, I’m likely to grin and say, “It’s complex.”
