Have you got a guardian angel? You know someone who has your back? Or does your’s just trill out, “You’re sinning, sinning, sinning!”
On the rare occasion that you do “right,” it plays Celestial Chords and hums? For the record, I’ve never had that type. And if I did, I’d have kicked it in the chops for being a total buzzkill.
Nope, being a boy from Washington Heights, Greenwich Village, Beacon Hill, and points that are hard to determine, my guardian angel was always the type that, shall we say, laid it out this way- ” hey man, that dude’s toasted, and about to start a fight. Let’s do a fade and go somewhere fun!”
Yup, the “Resistance is futile”sort of angel was never my sort. Even now, well into my seventh decade, I hear it cackle in the background, “It was wicked, but we loved it.”
Now, if you are stuck with the puritanical sort of angel, you have my sympathy. I advise getting some rope, looping it as tightly as possible, and tying it up. A bit of tape over the mouth helps.
Remember, go ahead an be a little crazy. But remember my favorite bit of advice from Herman Melville: Better to sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunken Christian.
Onward!

Ah ha! So that’s been the problem all along! I just got a hard ass guardian angel! Loved this, Lou.
Thanks, Violet! I was thinking about the character in your story today while I wrote it.
That character is me- True story- so now I think you understand what I said about the bad ass guardian angel….
I sometimes write about how grateful I am that I was able to stop drinking. People who have not viewed the world from the bottom of a bottle of booze have no clue.
You are so right.
Mine has a sick sense of humor, but he hangs in there.
My guardian angel catches sparrows in flight and gives them to me. It’s a reciprocal relationship. “You’re the best and bravest angel in the whole other world. Do you want a cookie?” I’ve never loved anything more than I love my guardian angel and she loves me.
Great post! My guardian angel is incredibly patient and has a lot of gray hair thanks to me. She has always been there for me in many forms including that voice in my head that tells me to “knock it off”. I’ve not always listened though – hence the gray hair. She and I make a great team! โค๏ธ
Mine is pure and plays the harp ๐
