Creep Factor

Do you know what a Creep Factor is? It’s the degree of creepiness that a statement or suggestion has. Like a WordPress Daily Writing Prompt that asks what you’d hope a single sentence sent to you from your future self would be. Damn, don’t do that to someone with an overactive imagination! The chances of disastrously interpreting it are enormous. How many hours could you spend torturously examining “Sheila was right” or ” go to the left!” Context is everything. And one sentence hung out there to dry has no context. It’s only an instrument of torture; a cryptic cry from out of the wilderness.

I assume that the aim was either to create something jocular or inspirationalโ€”the sort of thing that offered a renewal of interest, or an inspiration.

Instead, coming from the WordPress AI, it turns out to be a sort of cheap shot Deus ex machina with a high Creep Factor.

If your future self could send you one sentence, what do you hope it would say?

    1. Last night I decided not to do it, but then this morning I saw how I could turn it around as a snarky post. But I really am beginning to agree with the people who think the prompts are being done by AI. They have that not-quite-in-contact-with-reality feel and are becoming kind of creepy.

      1. Long long ago when RDP came into existence there was no AI. WordPress’ prompts were just as insipid and some of them seem to be recycled. Many of them also came out of Cranberry’s songs. Shudder. They could now be made by an AI, absolutely, that’s been trained on a freshman English text book. Sometimes I ask it to come up with a title for one of my blog posts and they’re always stupid.
