The Blog, me and you

Daily writing prompt
What change, big or small, would you like your blog to make in the world?

You’ll find a bit of everything on my blog, except poetry. Other than a few haiku, it’s never been my thing. I started the blog in 2018 as an adjunct to my woodcarving business. But I fell in with bad company her on Wword Press and pretty soon I was blathering on about Folkies, being on the road, performing, my garden, and lots of other subjects. It’s all proof that I am easily corrupted!

Do I have an ambition for it all? Is there a drive behind it? To an extent, there is. I want to interest people, perhaps suggest paths of thought or inquiry. Sometimes, especially about carving or anthropology, I want to educate, just a bit. I occasionally veer into the realm of politics, but try even there to keep it light.

In general, I bop about with subject matter, because I’m not interested in only one thing, and I bet that many of the people who take time to read my posts have diverse interests too. I try not to take deep dives, day after day on one subject.

If I’ve amused, introduced an interesting thought, or educated – just a bit- then the blog is doing what I hope for.

  1. You’ve given readers a look at a life far different than our own, so we can claim to have educated or “broadened our horizon” as well as amused and entertained us. ๐Ÿ™‚ Though most of us blog for our own enjoyment; I don’t know if a blog can aspire to changing the world much.

    1. I agree with you. But having worked as an applied anthropologist in urban communities, I’ve watched how ideas can spread and take action through initially small thoughts and actions. It’s not impossible.

  2. I like us corrupted types! It’s a fun spot here, Lou–and you know I have a soft spot for the kitties, including Clancey and HIM Xenia. RIP.

  3. I started my blog when I published Martin of Gfenn and read somewhere that the only way to market books was on a WordPress Blog. I thought, “Why not?” I had a personal blog on Blogger and that was fine with me. My experience here has gone through a lot of changes as has WP itself. Some of the people I read and who read me — well, we’ve been “together” for the whole ride.

At some point I realized that I’m not exactly like the other kids, and this is an opportunity to cast a wider net than I can cast in my small town.

This morning I thought about your spoons as I looked at a mosaic Tracy made me during COVID and sent all the way from Australia. I recently sent the reader of my blog (who’s in Australia) my China book because she, too, taught in China. A couple of the readers of my blog entered the contest I judge for and won. They learned about it here and their prizes mean a lot to them. BTW, I have to back away from judging books by people I know, but that makes their prizes even more meaningful.

I tear up thinking of the help I got during the time Bear and Teddy were at the kennel — most of it came from people who only know me here. My calendars are in kitchens all over the world because of this blog. The other day someone wrote me that she turned the page to August and the painting gave her hope. Some of my friends say this is not “real” but it’s very real and, I think, an important neighborhood for many of us and certainly for me.
